Voters mistakenly trying to vote early in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Voters are heading to clerks' offices in Saginaw and Genesee counties wanting to participate in early voting.

But secretary of state spokeswoman Kelly Chesney said Monday that Michigan isn't one of 31 states that let voters cast ballots before Election Day.

Michigan voters can vote before Nov. 4 only if they use an absentee ballot.

Absentee voting is allowed if the registered voter is age 60 or older, physically unable to attend the polls without assistance or expects to be out of town on Election Day.

Absentee ballots also can be obtained if someone is in jail awaiting arraignment or trial, unable to vote at a polling place for religious reasons or appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct outside of where they normally vote.
