SOUTH BEND — John McCain continues to hammer away at Barack Obama's tax plan, but a little fact checking has found that one of McCain's most recent ads contains inaccurate information.

The ad opens with Barack Obama talking with Joe the Plumber (aka Joe Wurzelbacher of Ohio).

"I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody," said Obama.

In this new ad, the McCain campaign infers Barack Obama will raise taxes on the average Joe, especially Joe the small business owner. Many who appear in the ad say they are "Joe."

But the claim that Obama will raise taxes on small business owners is false.

According to Obama's plan, as mapped on his website, middle class families will see their taxes cut. No family or small business making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase.

And Obama will ask the wealthiest 2 percent of families to give back a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years.

After hearing from all the average Joes, McCain's ad goes on to say "Higher taxes, more spending, not ready."

But once again that is false.

According to the Tax Policy Center, the Obama plan provides three times as much tax relief for middle class families as the McCain plan.

Not only that, but spreading the wealth around is a concept even John McCain hasn't always opposed.

In October of 2000, McCain said on MSNBC, "We feel, obviously, that wealthy people can afford more." He goes on to say "… that when you ... reach a certain level of comfort, there's nothing wrong with paying somewhat more."
