LANSING (AP) -- Former state Senator Jim Berryman of Adrian is telling supporters he's withdrawing from the race to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg in the 2008 election.

Berryman says he dropped out because he didn't want to have the labor endorsement split between him and other Democratic candidates.

State Senator Mark Schauer of Battle Creek and organic farmer Sharon Renier of Munith remain in the race.

Berryman plans to make a formal announcement Monday, but sent a statement to supporters Sunday night. Ann Arbor attorney David Nacht dropped out earlier.

The 7th District includes parts of seven counties in south-central Michigan. It has been targeted by Democrats because Walberg, of Tipton, failed to capture 50% of the vote in last year's election.
