Dyngus Day delivers more than just food and fun

SOUTH BEND — The West Side Democratic Club knows our area loves Kielbasa, Kluski, and Kapusta, which is why they have over 500 pounds of it for Dyngus Day.

Originating from Poland as the final day of Easter activities, South Bend relishes in the Monday celebration. Gubernatorial candidates love the holiday also, as the day signifies the commencement of the year's political season.

If you trust a politician in the kitchen, Congressman Joe Donnelly is on hand at the West Side Democratic Club all day serving up plenty of food!

"It's a great event that brings the community together," Donnelly said. "I walked out of the back door of the West Side Democratic Club last year, and there in the alley way is Bill Clinton, sitting at a little card table in a little folding chair signing autographs, line as long as the eye can see, and him smiling and laughing the whole time, and that kind of sums up Dyngus Day. It's a chance for everyone to be together. Here's the former President of the United States saying 'Do you want me to sign it to your mom and your sister too?' So that kind of sums it up."

Mayor Luecke is also on hand to help with the long-time tradition of renaming two local streets. The "Solidarity Day Drive" renaming will take place on the corner of Western Avenue and Laurel Street at the Elks Lodge #298, and the "Dyngus Day Drive" renaming is on the corner of Ford and Warren at the West Side Democratic Club.

The South Bend Republican City Committee and the St. Joseph County Republican Party are also celebrating Dyngus Day at the County Headquarters: 4133 S. Main Street, South Bend, IN 46614 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person and $10 per student.
