St. Joseph County voters are reminded that Tuesday is Election Day in the county. Polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. and photo identification is required to vote.

A provision in the state budget passed in June mandates residents in St. Joseph, LaPorte, Porter and Lake counties decide by voter referendum whether to form a regional transportation district with oversight of the South Shore Railroad and regional bus service in Lake and Porter counties.

Voters in two of the four participating counties will need to vote in favor of the referendum for it to pass. If it does, residents in those counties will then be taxed up to 0.25 percent to fund the district's operation.

Maps of polling locations can be viewed online by visiting the St. Joseph County's Web site (www.stjosephcountyindiana.com) and clicking on "Departments," then "Voter Registration," then "Voter Prec Maps," then "2009 Special Election."
