INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson planned to be begin airing her first general election television commercial on Tuesday.
She says in the 30-second spot that she grew up on a farm and learned the values of hard work and optimism, and Hoosiers share that outlook. But she says today, too many are being denied opportunities.
Then she takes a shot at Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, who is seeking re-election to a second term.
"When this governor says our economy is in great shape, he is out of touch with the challenges facing Hoosier families," she says. "That's why I am visiting communities all across Indiana — to show we can once again be a state where economic opportunity is the birthright of every Hoosier."
Long Thompson spokesman Jeff Harris said the commercial will air initially in the Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Evansville and Louisville TV markets, and then be expanded to others. He said she would remain on the air through the November election.
Daniels campaign spokesman Cam Savage had a sharp reaction to the commercial.
"It doesn't come as a big surprise to us that she would start with a commercial with a negative personal attack," he said. "Clearly her comments are negative in nature."
He said the Daniels campaign was going to stay positive and talk about economic successes under Daniels leadership, including more jobs, national awards for economic progress, the state's highest credit rating ever and three consecutive years of balanced state budgets.
Harris said Long Thompson's comment about the state economy reflects what residents have been telling her on the campaign trail.
"They are worried about the economic climate in Indiana, and as she has traveled the state they feel Indiana is heading in the wrong direction," Harris said.
Although Long Thompson aired TV commercials for about six weeks prior to her May 6 primary over Jim Schellinger, she had been off the air since then. Daniels did not face a primary opponent, but has been running TV ads nonstop since before the primary.
Savage said Daniels would keep running commercials through the November election.
