SOUTH BEND — The show will go on for Republicans in St. Paul this week, with the party set to announce Arizona Senator John McCain as the party's presidential nominee, but it will happen at a limited capacity.

As Gustav barreled toward the Gulf Coast, McCain announced he was scaling back plans at the convention, instead focusing on the victims and the devastation from the storm.

As Gustav made its way through the Gulf as a Category 3 storm, President Bush and Vice President Cheney announced they would not attend day one of the RNC.

With the emphasis placed on the victims, local Republicans have unanimously supported the party's efforts.

"This is the most important story in America right now," said Chris Riley, St. Joseph County Republican Party Chair.

Riley said the storm will take away some of the talk about the convention but said it was a smart move.

"This is not the appropriate time to have the cocktail party and the big speeches that are blasting the other side," said Riley. "This is the time to focus on Louisiana."

CNN polls show this is a critical time for the party. Obama and McCain are neck and neck in the polls. Obama has a one percentage point lead over McCain.

"I hope even if it leads to less exposure people will notice that Sen. McCain and the organizers had their priorities in the right place," said Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. "He did the right thing even if there is a cost."

Both Riley and Daniels believe the next few weeks following the RNC will be spent campaigning across key battleground states: Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan.

"Our time will come for us to get our message out," said Riley.

Riley said the grassroots campaigning will also allow the nation to get to learn more about Gov. Sarah Palin and their party's platform.

"They're going to go out to the American people and say what they are going to do to lower gas prices," said Riley. "They will say what they are going to do to keep Americans safe from abroad and within."

Everybody talks about morals, but having a pregnant daughter at 17 who will probably have a shotgun wedding makes me wonder what role models she followed. I know this happens, but it does not make it right and just because she keeps the baby does not make a good parent, but if mom makes VP they can get a nanny.

Hey Rick, can you quote me one "right wing christian" who criticized Jamie Lynn Spears, as you said? All I saw them saying was that she made a mistake, but was doing the right thing by keeping the baby. On the other hand, I saw the "tolerant" lefties talking on blogs about her as "ignorant white trash." Check the Huffington Post for that one. I am sure there are others. I know that in the liberal world, facts are just an annoyance, but try them once in a while.

One more thought. I feel awful for her daughter being in the spotlight like she is. I do applaud her for not aborting the baby. I truly feel the best role models are parents, and again, it makes me question what is going on in this home (or not going on). I am curious as to how much pressure this girl feels to get married because of her mothers political presence. Not saying it won't work, but odds are against them and it would be even sadder to see a child endure the devestation of divorce.

I bet all you left wingers are proud of your fellow nut case gay & lesbian and abortion supporting looneys making complete fools of themselves at the RNC. Can't you people do anything in a civilized manner? What a joke you ALL have become!

As an independant, I do not feel the issue is "right" and who is "wrong". My concern is you have a special needs child at home who is 4 months, and a daughter who is 17 and pregnant. While I have all the respect in the world for mothers who can balance full time work and motherhood, it really makes me wonder if S. Palin is putting politics ahead of her family, mainly because she had to know people would analyze her every move. If so, that is not consistant with "family values".

How are we gone be able to get in and get a picture of the running mate. They should open up large arena or rent a football field for those who really want to vote for him and see them personally. I wish the packers or the rams will rent their place and let them have the time of their lives when their speech inspire all of us who want to voto for Mcain

Mark, well put. Smear is all the democrats have for a defense. They are standing on very shaky ground and only the intelligent people that THINK for themselves know that. Look at Frank for example. Only able to regurgitate what the media tells him.

Let's talk about B.O. and his constant talk about how he and his wife don't like America but wait I want to run this country. Whatever. He is worse than John Kerry. By the way, B.O's mom was 18 when he was born. That's why he was on TV yeserday saying to reporters to leave her alone. Another skeleton in the closet of BO. One of many. Say No To BO.

I do not understand why Palins daughter being pregnant has anything to do with this election. Just another smear campaign at work by demo's. People just have to gossip or they are to dumb to keep their mouth shut.

My sister in law did the same thing. But, her marriage ended in divorce. Her son wonders why his father rejected . She was never able to go to college. This is the much more common picture. If this happened in a poor neighborhood, it would be called a moral failing (to quote Mary Mitchell). Mitchell is right. Republicans have been bashing the poor for this same behavior. I feel sorry for her daughter, perhaps sex ed would have stopped this from happening at all. But, Mom was against that

Well Well Well, miss Palin is a busy women, not as busy as her daughter. but busy. How nice. Im still voting for Obama.

Now they are criticizing Mrs. Palin for working with a 17 year old daughter pregnant. Like her not working would make a difference? She is a role model for that daughter to keep going no matter what is thrown your way. Can you imagine how that daughter would feel if she were the cause for her mother not to accept the nomination. That would cause permanent psychological damage. I guess maybe Palin should stay home, get unemployment or go on welfare. Maybe the idiots would condone that

My brother and his wife were married in her senior year, married early due to pregnancy. They are now in their 60's and their children all went to college. They have a beautiful family and have been married over 46 years. The bar is so high for political people and their families, it is a wonder anyone qualifies ever. If this is the worst they can come up with, and a DUI by her husband (not even her) over 20 years ago - that's fantastic.
