GRAND RAPIDS — Recent polls are showing Barack Obama's lead in Michigan growing.

Obama made two campaign stops there Thursday.

The Democratic presidential candidate spoke before a crowd of nearly 16,000 people during a rally at a downtown Grand Rapids plaza. Then he moved on to another outdoor rally on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing.

Obama is trying to energize supporters to register to vote before the registration deadline hits next week.

"For a Democrat to come into Gerry Ford country and draw the kind of crowds he has it's very invigorating," said David Rhem of Grand Rapids. "I wanted to be part of that."

Obama also had plenty to say about the economy. Most of his speech in Grand Rapids centered on the proposed financial bailout of Wall Street, the war in Iraq, health care, education and jobs.

"Senator McCain just doesn't get it," Obama said. "Michigan — you get it, I get it."

While Obama's lead continues to grow, so is the concern about the economy's perilous plunge.

“The cost of everything from gas to groceries is going up and up," he told the crowd. "These are the quiet storms that our families have been facing, these are the storms that are only going to get worse if we don't act.

"This financial crisis is of a direct result of the greed and the irresponsibility that has dominated Washington and Wall Street for years," Obama said.

Michelle Obama was also in Michigan. She held two events Thursday afternoon at high schools — the first in Saginaw, the other in Macomb County's Clinton Township.
