INDIANAPOLIS – Will Indiana's new governor and superintendent of schools be able to find common ground when it comes to education, despite partisan differences?
Governor Mike Pence and State School Superintendent Glenda Ritz met Tuesday for the first time since they both took office.
Some are predicting conflict between the two. Ritz is the only Democrat who holds statewide office.
Pence's budget increases school spending by only 1% this year.
Tuesday’s meeting lasted almost an hour. Both leaders were coy about what they discussed.
“I don’t want to discuss particularities that we covered in the meeting, but it was a good productive meeting and quite cordial,” said Pence.
“No, we didn’t talk budget at all,” added Ritz. We spent time talking about students, philosophical programming for students.”
A close working relationship between Ritz and Pence would not be unprecedented. Former Republican Superintendent Suellen Reed got along well with Democratic governors.
