Thieves have been nabbing packages from the doorsteps of several homes in an Indianapolis neighborhood. Now, the victims are fighting back with surveillance video.
Several homeowners in the Chessington Grove neighborhood in southeast Indianapolis, noticed they were missing packages that were supposed to be delivered to their homes on Friday.
Bayliss called police after realizing she was missing a package, and she soon found she wasn’t alone.
Another neighbor who noticed a missing package checked their surveillance cameras and discovered video of a white Buick LeSabre backing into their driveway. A man then got out of the car, walked up to the door, picked up a package, placed it under his shirt and then walked back to the car.
"I just, it kind of felt a little uncomfortable that they had wandered up to your front porch and taken packages,” Bayliss said. “It was a sweater to wear on my birthday.”
In all, police believe they took boxes from at least five homes. They know because they discarded the boxes right at the end of a cul-de-sac in the neighborhood.
"They found boxes and receipts just scattered," Bayliss said.
Randy Pierce said he noticed the white Buick back into his neighbor’s driveway Friday afternoon, but didn’t think twice about it at the time.
"At that time of the day, especially with somebody out walking around, you wouldn't think anybody would do anything like that," Pierce said.
Though Pierce didn’t see the man get out of the car, he said there wasn’t just one person involved.
"There were three,” Pierce said. “There were two in the front seat. One guy had longer hair and the other guy was bald in the middle. The guy in the backseat looked like he had curlier hair."
With a clear look at at least one of the suspects and a good look at the Buick, which was missing a front hubcap, neighbors are now working together to get the word out.
"I understand that times are tough but at the same time, you can't go out there and just do that to somebody,” Pierce said. “I mean, you've got to have a sense of morals."
In the meantime, the neighbors have been more cautious about their giving and their ordering.
"You do so much online shopping now that it makes me feel a little wary to order online again,” Bayliss said. “In the meantime, I'm going to do signature required for packages."
