(WSBT) A bumpy ride for drivers on a busy local road should get better.

A caller wanted to know, “Will the railroad crossing on Mayflower Road near the Bypass be fixed?”

It will, but drivers will need to show some patience.

It's a drive some drivers aren't real happy about these days.

“I got a new Dodge pick-up, a big Ram, and I will not take it across the railroad track. It's hard on the front end on this little thing,” one driver told WSBT News, referring to his car.

Close to the Bypass and South Bend's Belleville Softball Complex on the west side is Mayflower Road, and right now the railroad crossing on Mayflower is a rough ride.

“I worry about it. It has damaged [my car] to a certain extent,” said another driver. “You have to watch it and keep a new alignment all the time.”

Canadian National Railway operates the crossing, and a spokesman admits right now it's not in the best shape.

But there is some good news: Railroad workers are out this week patching up the crossing to get through winter. Then in the spring Canadian National plans to re-build the crossing.

But until then drivers will need to show some patience.

“They [talk about it] all the time,” said one driver when asked if the crossing’s bad condition was common knowledge around the area. “I drove for years […] and I would never come across with a semi.”

Several drivers WSBT News talked to were worried local or state government isn't fixing the crossing, especially with the influx of Toll Road lease money.

But maintenance of the road right around the crossing is actually the responsibility of the railroad company.
