MARSHALL COUNTY — The bill for cleaning up the mess following an accident in Marshall County is growing larger.

Monday, crews closed one lane in each direction on U.S. 31 as they cleaned up contaminated soil.

Bill Mellish of Elkhart has a Good Question: How much do the owners of the semis involved have to pay toward the cleanup?

WSBT's Kirk Mason has the answer.

The final financial tally from the crash is not yet known, partly because the number is still growing.

Monday lanes closed in both directions as crews cleaned up contaminated soil.

The mess started last week with an accident involving two semis. Police say a truck rear-ended a tanker, spilling liquid natural gas.

State police say who pays for cleanup and the rebuilding of the road is now in the hands of insurance.

But ultimately it will fall under a trucking company's insurance — it just depends which one.

The Marshall County detective handling the case says so far no tickets have been issued. The investigation is still underway — the detective is waiting on the truck black boxes and another report.

A state police spokesperson says typically these types of crashes can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to clean up.

The resources police put into a crash site like that is not reimbursed. A state police spokesperson says that's their job.
