SOUTH BEND — South Bend's License Branch is moving. But no longer from the west side to the northwest side.

It's coming downtown.

Dan from South Bend has a Good Question: What is the status of the South Bend BMV branch?

Right now South Bend's License Branch is on Western Avenue on the west side. That will soon change.

A spokesperson for Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles tells WSBT News a ground breaking is imminent for a new driver's license branch downtown. This site is east of Michigan Street near the Social Security office and Transpo bus station.

South Bend's Common Council has approved zoning for the project. The mayor's office says the ground breaking will be in 2008. The project will be finished sometime in 2008.

Originally the state had made plans to move the branch to the northwest side at Cleveland Road and the Bypass in the Carbon Mill Plaza. That development now has it's first store opening.

The state made the decision to put the new branch downtown, instead of on the northwest side, after listening to the concerns of city leaders.
