MISHAWAKA — It's a subject we get a lot of Good Questions about — the Main Street underpass in Mishawaka.

Norma Zellers of Mishawaka wants to know, "When will Main Street open?"

That project was supposed to wrap up next month.

For now the city is sticking to its word. They expect to reopen that stretch of Main Street later next month. But after several delays, drivers aren't so sure this will actually happen, and the city says they also have some concerns.

"We should have everything in place and ready to open, by the latest, at the end of February,” said city engineer Gary West.

But that all depends one thing — the weather — and that leaves many drivers skeptical.

"It's been pretty cold, so we'll see,” said Chet Perry.

"There's times when no one’s out there working because of the weather,” said Marie Gildner.

Since late November, the project has faced a couple of setbacks, including the cold weather.

"We've now had a delay on some fiber optic that needs to rerouted. They were supposed to have that done a couple of weeks ago,” said West. “I think they're anticipating having most of that done by the latter part of this week or early next week."

The city is now deciding what kind of material to put back on the road crossing surface. Because hot asphalt is not available this time of year, they're going to have to use a material called cold patch.

"My concern is going to be if we open it and the material continues to deteriorate, then we'd have to close part of it or maybe all of it and go back to the detour,” explained West.

On time or not, drivers say it will be nice when Main Street finally opens.

"I travel down in that area quite a bit because I have my own business, so it does make a difference,” Perry said.

The city has a progress meeting next week. That's when they hope to decide on an exact date to reopen Main Street.
