Spring means another big change — daylight-saving time.

Patti Doyle of South Bend has a Good Question: When do we spring ahead?

As WSBT's Kirk Mason explains, the change is now less than two weeks away.

The time will change early Sunday morning on March 9. If that seems earlier than in the past, that's because it is.

“It's actually better with crime statistics, accident statistics as well,” explained Rep. Fred Upton (R-Michigan). “Most of that happens in the afternoon so by having that extra hour we're going to be better off.”

But the main reason for the change is energy. It's no secret the price of energy is way up. Rep. Upton proposed the energy bill that Congress passed during the summer of 2005. daylight-saving time is now observed three weeks earlier in the spring, and one week later in the fall.

“But we actually save, the statistics came out, we save the equivalent of 100,000 barrels of energy a day for every day that we extend it,” Rep. Upton said.

This will be the country's second spring of springing forward three weeks sooner.
