MISHAWAKA — It's a bridge project that didn't get done on time but it's not clear yet how much that will cost the builder.

In tonight's good question, Doug of Mishawaka asked, "Were the builders of the Logan Street Bridge fined for being late on finishing the job?"

WSBT's Kirk Mason has the latest.

The Logan Street Bridge separates Mishawaka from South Bend. It's now been open for almost six months.

On a rainy March day the sidewalk is little used, but county engineers say it was a big part of the delay. It was a late addition to the project.

The bridge closed in October of 2005. It didn't re-open until almost two years later.

St. Joseph County fined Northern Indiana Construction $1,500 a day. But how many days and how much money remains in question.

The county and the builder are negotiating. The state has to approve the deal. If the sides can't agree litigation is possible.

County Commissioner Steve Ross says the builder argues some of the delays were out of their control, so they shouldn't be fined for those days.

The county has withheld money from the builder; the issue is how much money they will pay out.

Ross has heard the fines could total $60,000 but he thinks they should be even larger.
