Electronic Tolling is coming to the entire Indiana Toll Road on Tuesday April 1. That means some drivers are facing changes.

Rhonda from Elkhart has a Good Question: Why are the commuter card rates being eliminated after April 1?

WSBT's Kirk Mason asked the company that operates the Toll Road.

Right now some drivers on the Indiana Toll Road use something called a commuter card. That card gives them a daily discount for the same drive. In other words if you drive from the same Elkhart exit to the same South Bend exit each day there's a discount of up to 50 percent.

A spokesperson for the company leasing the Toll Road says that system is going away in favor of “the overwhelming benefits of electronic tolling.”

Those benefits include not needing to grab a ticket, or even roll down a window if you have an electronic transponder. Drivers with that transponder will get a discount.

But the Toll Road spokesman concedes some drivers who now use a commuter card will wind up paying more under electronic tolling.

If you have an electronic transponder, Toll Road rates won't go up Tuesday. It would still cost $4.65 to travel the entire road, without electronic tolling that jumps to $8.
