Indiana's sales tax is now higher. It jumped from 6 to 7 percent this month.

It's part of a plan to lower what Indiana homeowners are paying on property taxes.

Lori Benjamin of Mishawaka wants to know, “If you exchange an item from a store originally bought before April 1 do you have to pay the higher sales tax?”

Indiana's Department of Revenue oversees the sales tax.

Department spokeswoman Stephanie Mcfarland says if it's an even exchange you shouldn't have to pay more sales tax, although the store has some discretion.

But if you exchange an item for something that costs more in that case you would then pay the 7 percent sales tax.
