SOUTH BEND — A lot of construction is happening right now on a key road that connects downtown South Bend to the developing northwest part of the city.

Richard Sith of South Bend wants to know, "When is Portage Avenue going to re-open?"

There are three separate issues on Portage Avenue. The first is the roundabout at Portage and Lathrop. City Engineer Carl Littrell says it will reopen May 12.

Littrell says the second roundabout at Portage and Boland is scheduled to be finished June 3. At that point, Portage will open back up.

And then work will shift to expanding Portage to four lanes north of Boland. That work is scheduled to be completed by early November.

There are many homes along that stretch of Portage Avenue. So the construction is also including a new path for walkers, runners and bikers.
