The school year is winding down, so a lot of families are making plans for summer vacation right now.

Scott Breeding of South Bend wants to know, "What is the date of the free fishing weekend?"

Unless you’re a child, you need a fishing license to fish legally. That is except on the weekend of June 7 and 8. Both Indiana and Michigan will offer free fishing that weekend.

The Department of Natural Resources say it happens in many states around the country each year. The idea is to get people who normally don't fish to give it a try.

Normally there's an expense that comes with fishing.

A full year license in Indiana costs $28, if you exclude salmon and trout then it's $17. For an out-of-state resident it's even more — $44, or $35 if you exclude salmon and trout.

In Michigan, a fishing license costs $28 for a resident, $15 if you take out salmon and trout. For an out-of-state resident it's $42 for an all species license or $34 for the restricted license.

Michigan also offers a free fishing weekend in the winter, when ice fishing is popular.

Next winter it will be on February 14 and 15.
