It's something that can lead to a little neighborhood tension — A noisy neighbor wakes you up.

Suzy from Elkhart asked, "Are there any laws concerning lawn mowing, whether there is a certain time in the morning you can start and time in the evening to stop?”

A lawn mower is one of the sounds of summer. But how much you tolerate the noise may depend on what time of day you hear it.

If you've ever been woken up earlier than you'd like, depending on where you live your neighbor may have broken the law.

For example, both South Bend and Mishawaka have noise ordinances that city attorneys say lawn mowers would fall under.

In both cities the ordinance covers between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. If lawn mowing is happening between those hours and it's too loud you can call police.

Police can write tickets, but a warning is much more likely.

Elkhart also has a noise ordinance that lawn mowers would fall under, police say it's not time of day specific. But if you have a complaint you can call police and they can issue a warning or take a decibel level — and if it exceeds 83 — hand out a ticket.

In St. Joseph County, Attorney Mario Zappia says he doesn't think lawn mowers would apply under the county's noise ordinance.

Why don't you pass another stupid law so the useless cops can fine someone????? That always seems good.

Anybody who is used to working a graveyard shift, wear ear plugs if you don't like it

The big question is, do you have to wear clothing when you mow?

Lets carry this a little farther. What if the power goes out and you start up your generator. They make more noise than a lawn mower.

Who would be so rude as to mow after ten pm or before seven am?
