(WSBT photo) SOUTH BEND — There's plenty of turmoil surrounding the South Bend School Board right now after they voted to oust Superintendent Robert Zimmerman. Moreover, the controversy is happening during an election year. Karen Haun wants to know: Who elects the school board? Are they elected by voters in the city of South Bend and not all of St. Joseph County? WSBT’s Kirk Mason has the answer. South Bend’s seven member school board is elected by people who live in the school district. So it's not limited to just South Bend residents, but it also doesn't include the entire county. Even if you live in the school district you don't get to decide the entire makeup of the board. You actually only get to vote on three of the seven positions. Of South Bend's seven board members, two are at-large seats. All voters living within the school district can vote on those seats. Both at-large members Ann Rosen and Kim Barnbrook are up for re-election this year. The remaining five school board members each represent a district. You get to vote for the board member who represents your district. This November Dawn Jones and Bill Sniadecki are the two representing districts that are up for re-election. The South Bend School Board has a buyout offer ready for Robert Zimmerman, but Zimmerman is on vacation until next week. The school board only has itself to blame for the nonperforming schools, drop out rate, the inability to hire and retain a qualified superintendent. I pulled my child out of the SBCS district. The accountability rests with them, they are not business people. They cannot even make a decision how and when to conduct a search. Will someone wake up.
