Can you contract West Nile Virus more than once?

By Tiffany Griffin

It's been a wet start to summer which means we could be feeling a lot of mosquitoes this year.

Anthony from Bremen wants to know, "Can you contract West Nile Virus more than once?"

A communicable disease expert from the Elkhart County Health Department says it's possible, but not likely. If you have a weak immune system it could happen.

However it may be more difficult this summer to find out if West Nile is coming.

So far this year there has not been a single human case of West Nile Virus in Indiana.

Indiana's Department of Health says some mosquitoes in Marion County have tested positive for the virus.

In St. Joseph County, even if mosquitoes had the virus we wouldn't know. That's because the health department is not testing mosquitoes this year, because of budget cuts.

In Elkhart County they are testing mosquitoes and so far none have tested positive. But a county health official told WSBT it's not if, but when, mosquitoes and likely a person will test positive this year for West Nile.

Indiana's Department of Health is concerned the flooding issues across Indiana will lead to more mosquitoes this year and that could lead to more cases of the West Nile Virus.

My mom had west niles last year. She's worried about getting it again. She had breast cancer in 2003. And again in 2007. Both removed. Had chemo with the first, none with the second. She had a seizure with the west niles. She is still tired quite a bit.Could she get it again?
