No doubt a lot of you will be spending a lot of time outside this holiday weekend. You may also be beating off the mosquitoes with a stick.

Keri Ann of St. Joseph wants to know, "Will I be battling mosquitoes all summer or will they die off and let me enjoy my deck?"

As WSBT found out, that depends on the weather and on you.

Mosquitoes are nothing new — they're around here every summer. But if they seem worse to you so far this year, it's because they are.

We've had a lot of rain — and standing water breeds mosquitoes.

Linda Mauller from St. Joseph County's Health Department says if the mosquitoes are really bad at your house, hope for some dry weather.

Your other option is to eliminate standing water at your house. You can also buy items at local hardware stores called BTIs. You set them in the water and they prevent mosquito larvae from becoming insects. A six-pack of them may cost around $10.

St. Joseph County is not spraying for mosquitoes. The Health Department says it would cost thousands of dollars to do it effectively.
