Local dealers tells us sales are through the roof on scooters and mopeds. It's a reaction to the rising gas prices.

Peggy from South Bend wants to know, "What are the laws concerning these vehicles?"

The rules of the road for scooter and moped drivers comes down to speed.

Indiana State Police define something as a motorized bicycle if it goes under 25 mph, has an automatic transmission, has an engine rating of less than two horsepower and a cylinder capacity of less than 50 cubic centimeters.

If your moped or scooter falls under these guidelines, a 15-year-old with a state issued photo ID can operate one. But you can't drive it on an interstate or a sidewalk.

If the vehicle goes faster than 25 mph then it's considered a motorcycle, and a driver's license is needed.

Michigan's rules are very similar, except instead of 25 mph, the speed threshold is 30 mph.

Indiana State Police say someone riding a motorized bicycle who is under 18 must wear a helmet and protective goggles or glasses.
