Does the increase in locusts mean a harsh winter is coming?by Kirk Mason (mason@wsbt.com)
(WSBT file photo) Are you hearing a little extra noise around your house lately? Shane Hinkle of North Webster says he's hearing an increase in the number of locusts. He asks, "Is it true that since there are as many as there are now, that we will have a harsh winter?" Phil Marshall directs the Department of Natural Resources Entomology Division. He says a lot of locusts does not mean a harsh winter is coming; that's an urban legend. As for why there may be a lot of locusts this year, Marshall says they may be what are called "Dog-Day Cicadas" that can come every year, not the once-every-13-years version. And they do make noise. It's a mating call from males trying to attract females. That picture makes them look ugly and scary. They are acually quite facinating up close.
