SOUTH BEND — The City of South Bend is placing a lot of emphasis on the south side of town. There are new stores, and plenty of road construction.

But Dolores Hardy of South Bend wonders if there could be more. She asked, "Will Ireland Road between Ironwood Drive and U.S. 31 (Michigan Street) be repaved this year?"

There is work happening on the south side right now — the rebuilding of the intersection at Miami Street and Ireland Road.

Last year the city did lots of work at Michigan Street and Ireland.

But City Engineer Carl Literrel says repaving of Ireland from Ironwood to Michigan won't happen this summer and it's not likely to happen next summer either. The next priority appears to be work at the Ireland and Ironwood intersection.

Literrel says the city is spending $475,000 on road work in that part of the city this year, more than any other part.

Literrel says the Wheel Tax and Fuel Tax pay for South Bend road projects. And he says the amount of money generated from the Fuel Tax is going down as people drive less and cars become more fuel efficient.
