If you own a home in St. Joseph County, you're still waiting and wondering about property tax bills.

Kathi of South Bend asked a Good Question: "When will St. Joseph County be sending out fall property tax statements?"

WSBT's Kirk Mason found out the county still doesn't know.

St. Joseph County Treasurer Sean Coleman says one possibility is the spring property tax bill, which has still not gone out, will come before the holidays and the fall bill will come after the holidays.

The state wants six weeks in between the two bills. Coleman says they are still waiting on the state to certify the tax rate and that is causing the delay.

Coleman points out taxpayers can pay right now without knowing the exact amount. Many homeowners also have taxes escrowed into their mortgage payment.

St. Joseph County has already received about $60 million in voluntary tax payments. Coleman estimates that's about a quarter of what they'll eventually get.
