When you head to Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicle branches it can mean long lines, headaches and a big bill.

James from South Bend asked a Good Question: “Where does that BMV money go?"

WSBT's Kirk Mason looked into it.

Earlier this year the state of Indiana opened a new Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch in downtown South Bend. According to the state, during 2007, all branches around the state took in $900 million.

More than half of that money — $490 million — is excise, wheel and surtax money collected for local counties. The rest of the money goes to different state funds — ranging from things like an Anti-terrorism Fund to a Breast Cancer Awareness Fund.

Last year Indiana BMV branches also generated $120 million for the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund. That fund helps pay for road projects around the state.
