With the holidays, will tax payments be processed in a timely manner?

By WSBT News1

If you own property in St. Joseph County, you should now have your tax bill. The bills aren't due until next year, but many taxpayers want to pay before the end of the year so they can get a deduction on their 2008 tax return.

Linda from South Bend asked a Good Question: With the holidays, will tax payments be processed in a timely manner? WSBT's Kirk Mason explains what you need to do to make sure you don't lose your deduction.

Accountants say the key to being able to claim property taxes on your 2008 tax return comes down to the postmarking of the mail. If you get that bill in the mail, and it's postmarked December 31st or earlier, you can use that deduction.

One way to make sure that happens is to go to the post office in person. But, if you are concerned about the mail, you can also go and pay your property tax bill in person at the County City Building in downtown South Bend before the end of the year.

If you're not concerned about taking a deduction, tax bills are due February 20th in St. Joseph County
