MISHAWAKA — It's one of our area's busiest traffic spots and right now the setup is confusing some drivers. We're talking about the Grape Road entrance to University Park Mall in Mishawaka.

Jim Carpenter of South Bend asked a Good Question: Why hasn't the city of Mishawaka marked the newly-widened intersection at Grape Road and University Park Drive?

WSBT's Kirk Mason looked into it.

There are big changes happening at University Park Mall. New stores are being built that shoppers enter from outside. But the changes are not just limited to the walking part of a shopping trip; drivers are also noticing some differences.

Double turn lanes have been added to the Grape Road University Park Drive intersection. But many drivers have expressed concern to us because the lanes aren't properly marked.

Mishawaka City Engineer Maria Buysse says they had temporary markings but snow plows knocked them off. Now they need a string of warmer, above-freezing temperatures to put them back on. The permanent markings won't come until spring, when asphalt work can be finished after warmer temperatures arrive for good.

A stretch of warm for January weather will allow crews to get temporary markings back out at the intersection, but if snow follows plows could cause problems with those markings again.
