What odor does meth give?

It's become an almost daily part of our newscasts, reporting on the increasing number of methamphetamine labs around Indiana.

Local police say you can help them arrest meth makers.

Kris Hill of Mishawaka has a Good Question: "What odor does meth give?"

WSBT's Kirk Mason has the answer.

Across Indiana during 2008, state police uncovered almost 1,100 meth labs. That's an increase of almost a third, when compared to 2007.

Noble County had the most meth lab busts in Indiana last year with 80. Elkhart County had the second most with 65.

One way to put meth makers out of business is through tips from neighbors who smell the odor. Ed Windbigler, a lieutenant with Elkhart police, says meth carries an ammonia-like smell. He compares it to a cat litter box that is unclean, meaning the smell of the urine.

But Windbigler points out that through the one-pot method, meth makers are now using items like 1 liter pop bottles as a mini drug lab, and the smell dissipates.

That makes it harder to catch the bad guys.
