Indiana recently extended unemployment benefits for an extra 13 weeks; but not everyone is eligible.

Tori from Osceola has a Good Question: "Who is eligible for the recent unemployment extension?"

WSBT's Kirk Mason looked into it.

Unemployed Indiana workers are entitled to 59 weeks — that's more than a year of unemployment benefits. The unemployment extension is 13 weeks on top of that, making the total 72 weeks.

But these final 13 weeks are more difficult to qualify for:

  • First you must have a UI — or unemployment insurance — benefit end date of March 21, 2009 or later.

  • Then to keep these 13 weeks of additional benefits, you must apply for three jobs a week and maintain a work search log. Work search waivers are no longer available.

  • And you must accept any work you can physically perform.

You apply in person for these benefits at a WorkOne office, but the state is informing people who are eligible through a letter. So if you haven't received a letter that should mean you are not eligible.

About 3,400 people across Indiana originally qualified for the extended benefits, with an additional 2,000 adding on each week.
