ST. JOSEPH CO. — Is someone in your neighborhood annoying you by constantly burning something? In St. Joseph County the rules differ a lot depending on where you live.

Kelly Todman of Granger has a Good Question: "What is the local ordinance for burning in Granger?"

WSBT's Kirk Mason looked into it.

The cities of South Bend and Mishawaka do not allow burning at all. The unincorporated areas of St. Joseph County, which of course includes Granger, allow some burning but under strict rules.

According to Clay Township Fire Marshall Dave Cherrone, to burn leaves in the county the leaves must be in a container and not on the ground. That container must also have a screen — often called a spark arrestor — lid on top.

No yard waste or glass clippings are supposed to be burned. You can burn brush or twigs in the county, but a burning permit is required.

The St. Joseph County Health Department issues the permits, and you can get a permit application at any county fire station.

Local police departments can issue tickets to anyone who violates the burning ordinance.
