ST. JOSEPH CO. — Now that we know St. Joseph County's income tax is going up, many retirees are wondering how this news will impact them.

Bob Kincaid of South Bend has a Good Question: How will this affect Social Security income alone?

WSBT's Kirk Mason looked into it.

This 0.95 percent tax hike in St. Joseph County will not impact monthly Social Security checks.

Robert Walsh, the local spokesman for Social Security, says retirees need not worry about their monthly payment dropping.

Walsh says that's the case for both the income part of this tax along with the public safety and economic development portions.

But Walsh does say the tax increase could have some impact on a retiree’s tax return.
