SOUTH BEND — There is something you don't normally see at a busy South Bend intersection right now, and it's creating some confusion for drivers.

Danielle of Mishawaka has a Good Question: "What is the purpose of the messed up intersection at the end of Twyckenham and State Road 23?"

Danielle is talking about the yellow posts coming up from the ground. They're called delineators, and are a temporary addition to the intersection of State Road 23, or South Bend Avenue, and Twyckenham south of the Notre Dame campus.

Right now Eddy Street leading toward the Notre Dame campus is closed off South Bend Avenue for the construction of the Eddy Street Commons shopping, condo and office complex.

That is bringing much more traffic into the Twyckenham area these days. The delineators are up to prevent Twyckenham traffic from crossing South Bend Avenue and going further south on Twyckenham.

South Bend Engineer Carl Littrell says the city made a promise to neighbors in that area not to open that up for traffic until South Bend Avenue is widened to four lanes, and a four-way traffic stoplight is installed.

The widening of State Road 23 in that area is a state project. City engineers are now expecting that work to be done two years from now, in 2011. Originally, there were hopes the work might get done sooner.
