South Bend Regional Airport will soon start to undergo a facelift.

Michael Lane of South Bend has a Good Question: "When are they going to start construction on the new terminal?

It is being described as a major expansion of the South Bend Regional Airport terminal ― 45,000 square feet. That expansion will include five new gates, a dining room, lounge, gift shop and children's room.

Passenger screening will also be consolidated to one single, larger location.

Airport Executive Director John Schalliol says bids for construction will all be in by September 17. After that, the winner will be chosen. Schalliol expects construction to start in early October.

Schalliol says if that happens, workers should be able to get a foundation down in time to work through winter.

The project is expected to be finished by 2011, although it’s unclear specifically when.

This airport expansion is expected to cost $12.5 million. Airline ticket taxes paid by passengers are supporting much of this project, not property taxes.
