SOUTH BEND — Parents dropping off children at South Bend schools are noticing some new signs this year.

Joe from South Bend has a Good Question. He saw a sign with a “no cell phone” symbol, and wonders what it means.

Signs like the one that can be found along Eddy Street are popping up near South Bend schools. The city is trying to keep kids safe around schools by stopping distracted drivers from talking on cell phones.

Over the summer, the South Bend City Council banned cell phone use in any marked school zone within the city limits while school is in session. Hands-free devices are exempt.

Drivers caught talking or texting can face fines ― $75 for the first offense, $125 the second time and $250 for a third offense.

Beside those fines being a deterrent, they may also be needed to offset a cost. It was estimated putting 20 of these signs up would cost the city $11,000.
