It had many of you calling and e-mailing us over the weekend. In this Good Question, we want to address what a lot of you asked: “Why didn't WSBT air the Indianapolis Colts game on Sunday?”

Unless you went to a bar, or watched on satellite, most local Indianapolis Colts fans were not able to see much more than highlights of Sunday's win over Seattle. At the same time the Colts were playing, WSBT was airing the Browns-Bengals game. Many of you wondered why WSBT didn't air the Colts game. The answer is we couldn't ― it was not a CBS game, it was a FOX game.

CBS has the American Football Conference contract. FOX has the National Football League conference. What that means is most Colts games air on CBS and most Bears games on FOX, but sometimes there is a twist.

Sunday's Bears-Lions game, both NFC teams, is a FOX game. But so was the Colts game because they also played an NFC team. That means the local FOX affiliate had to choose between the Bears and Colts.

Last December WSBT was in the same position and chose to air the Bears over the Colts.

Darin Pritchett of WSBT Radio is the host of Weekday Sportsbeat on News Talk 960 AM.

“Without a doubt, if someone is going to talk NFL, it’s going to be Bears. Colts are just not a major conversation piece on our program,” said Pritchett.

But Pritchett concedes that with a popular player like Peyton Manning, the number of local Colts fans is growing.

“A younger generation now has a choice between Bears and Colts,” said Pritchett. “You think about the Colts coming in the 80's, now a generation has a choice. So I think there are a lot more Colts fans in the area.”

In the end it comes down to scheduling. In most seasons it is likely that once or twice a year a local television station will have to make a tough call, and that is sure to make someone angry.

A couple of years ago when the Bears and Colts met in the Super Bowl, WSBT did an unscientific poll. A majority of respondents to that poll were Bears fan, but that Super Bowl is also believed to be the most watched program ever on WSBT, which just proves both teams have many local fans.
