When will the expansion around Coveleski Stadium happen?

By Jason Overholt

There is a push among city leaders to bring new development to downtown South Bend, but the poor economy may get in the way.

Tom Miller of South Bend has a Good Question: “When will the expansion around Coveleski Stadium happen?”

The answer is that city leaders can't say when.

The plan is to build up the area around Coveleski Stadium in downtown, but for now it is still just a plan. A car dealership is gone, some parking lots have been cleaned up, but now comes the hard part — landing a developer or developers.

Bill Schallio of South Bend Economic Development says apartments overlooking the field where the South Bend Silverhawks play is one possibility. A restaurant or restaurants is also on the table.

Schallio says potential investors have been looking at the property, and the city hopes to have a developer in the spring, or maybe even as early as this winter. But that is contingent on the improvement of a very soft economy for new development.

South Bend hired a consultant that's worked on major league ballparks to come up with a master plan for development around the Cove. More will come out about that plan in the coming weeks.
