(WSBT) Posted speed limits change a lot on one busy local road.

Michael Nolen of Osceola wants to know, "What is the real speed limit on Portage in South Bend, between downtown and Lathrop?"

If your daily drive takes you on busy Portage Avenue in South Bend you know right now there's a lot of construction.

A roundabout is being built at Portage and Lathrop. That's not expected to be done until the end of November.

Further south a bridge is being re-surfaced. That work won't be done until October.

But if the speed limits on Portage seem to change a lot that's nothing new.

The city and county engineering departments set the speed limits on Portage, not the police department.

WSBT News talked to engineers and they say the limits have not changed on that stretch of Portage since construction started.

The limits do go up and down a lot, but that's because drivers go in and out of residential areas a lot.

When the road goes through a residential area it's 20 mph, over the bridge it's 30 mph.

South Bend Police say speeding is not the biggest problem on Portage right now. It's drivers ignoring “NO LEFT TURN” signs set up because of the construction. The turning cars block traffic, adding to the congestion.
