"Feel the burn" is a phrase popularized by 1980s exercise videos. But it's still relevant today, as long as you know what you're doing.

You don't need quivering washboard abs in order to "feel the burn" during a workout.

Author and fitness guru Jorge Cruise says there's a difference between feeling pain and feeling the burn.

“It feels like, literally, there is heat in the muscle,” Cruise explained. “That's where the word came from and it’s the muscle fibers were literally pushed beyond their limit.”

Cruise says anyone, at almost any age, can benefit from the workout concept by using a good strength training regimen that develops muscles.

“Strength training is everything,” Cruise said. “You feel the burn from lifting weights, and it doesn't have to be heavy weights. It can be a controlled-tension type of exercise where it's slow and where you stop for a few seconds.”

Squats, abdominal crunches and push-ups offer the same effect.

“Twice a week for about 20 minutes is all you need, if you do it effectively and you feel the burn with each exercise,” Cruise said.

Cruise recommends resting your muscles the remainder of the week or incorporating a cardio workout.

If you feel pain during your workout, stop.
