Doctors reconsidering diet's relationship to acne

(CNN) Acne is the most common skin problem in the United States, and now experts are taking a second look at certain foods that may cause flare-ups.

Doctors used to dismiss chocolate or greasy foods causing breakouts as an old wives tale. But a study by the Harvard School of Public Health indicates that may not be true, and other foods could also cause flare-ups.

“And then we have some young men and women who have diets which are very rich in milk and milk products, yogurt, cheese,” explained Dr. Jeffrey Dover, a dermatologist. “If they're willing, we ask them to go on a milk exclusion diet for a while to just see if excluding those will actually help their acne.”

Doctors admit when it comes to treating acne, it often takes a multi-pronged approach — including medication and laser treatment — to find relief.
