LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Governor Jennifer Granholm has signed a law supporters say will improve the organ donation process and strengthen the rights of organ donors.

Legislation signed Friday mirrors laws passed in 20 other states. It aims to streamline organ donation.

There currently is a hodge podge of confusing and conflicting state and federal laws that can affect someone's wish to be a donor. There have been problems with family members overriding someone's choice to donate or not to donate.

Advocates of organ donation are trying to create uniformity among states.

One problem occurs when a person has expressed a desire to be an organ donor but also has signed a health care directive that specifies no life support is to be used to sustain life.

What is with these surviving family members? If donating their organs was what the deceased wanted, who are they to go against their last wish? It's not enough that their loved one died, they're going to possibly contribute to several other peoples' deaths while they're on an organ donor waiting list. Selfish.
