(CBS) The death of a perfectly healthy teenager is putting the risks of plastic surgery in the spotlight again. The 18-year-old died after doctors gave her anesthesia. That's just one of many risks involved in going under the knife.

Flowers and pictures are left outside West Boca High School for Stephanie Kuleba. The Florida teen died after undergoing plastic surgery.

"It's really a hard thing to deal with, she was an amazing person … everyone misses her a lot,” said coworker Vicky Goldring.

The 18-year-old went in for corrective breast surgery and enhancement.

The doctor told Stephanie's family they believe she suffered a very rare reaction to anesthesia called malignant hyperthermia.

"Malignant hyperthermia is a catastrophic condition that's caused by certain anesthetic agents that trigger a chain reaction within the body,” explained plastic surgeon Dr. Frederick Lukash.

Plastic surgery has gained in popularity with teenagers, and among all age groups there were close to 2 million procedures done last year. While the vast majority are successful it's important to remember that surgery comes with

Stephanie Kuleba's type of reaction is very, very rare; however anesthesia can be potentially dangerous for some.

"People who have problems with their heart or their lungs, who are diabetic,” said plastic surgeon Jennifer Levine.

Levine says it's important to carefully screen patients for possible complications. More common risks are bleeding during surgery and infection — both can have deadly consequences.

"You should always be aware of all the potential risks and make sure this decision is well thought out,” Levine said.

No matter how old the patient is.
