Did you ever notice how good you feel after a good laugh?

Laughter holds many health benefits and now scientists are figuring out why.

It's no joke — laughing can improve your health. That may be why laughter clubs have popped up around the nation. They meet once a week and are led by Doctor Alex Eingorn

“And you go ah, ah - ha, ha, ha," Eingorn told laughter enthusiasts.

The chiropractor actually underwent training to become a laughter ambassador. He uses goofy situations to induce giggling and for good reasons.

"Overall, it's a very healthy experience, said Eingorn. “So try laughing as much as possible.”

Behind the silliness is some serious science. Research has shown laughing can boost the immune system. It also helps the heart by relaxing blood vessels.

Now scientists have found laughter can influence our hormones.

In a new study, doctors tested patients' blood before and after a laugh. They found when people feel a laugh coming on, the level of certain detrimental hormones decreases, including cortisol.

"And cortisol is really a nasty hormone. It's one of the stress hormones which tends to elevate blood pressure — tends to harden our arteries," said Eingorn.

But science isn't why these classes have become popular.

“Why do I keep coming back? Because I walk out of here feeling like a million dollars,” said laughter enthusiast Colin Christopher.

“It's that giddy feeling that I get when I leave here that keeps me coming back,” said Maureen Lloren, another laughter enthusiast.

If laughter is the best medicine, these folks are getting a good dose.
