SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Health Department says 30 percent of local children under the age of 3 are not immunized.

Health care professionals, parents, and community leaders
attended a summit Wednesday on ways to improve those rates.

The Health Department says the biggest problem for some parents is a lack of insurance coverage.

The summit hopes to spread the word that vaccinations are important.

"Our focus right now is going to be those children that are the underserved population and are under the age of 3," said Barbara Baker of the St. Joseph County Health Department.

Baker says changing attitudes will take time.
