Does chocolate lower risk of heart disease?

(CBS) — It's the kind of medicine anyone would enjoy taking.

British researchers are looking for female volunteers to eat luxury chocolate to see if it lowers their risk of heart disease. Researchers need post-menopausal women who have diabetes.

The British study centers on the idea that something called flavanoids, found in pure cocoa and soy, have been found to reduce heart disease.

A Belgian chocolatier is making special bars packed with these flavonoids in high concentrations.

“We wouldn't recommend you go and eat lots of chocolate because it's a high fat, high sugar product which could ultimately lead to more problems than benefits that you're trying to gain on balance,” explained nutritionist Nicole Berberian.

Plenty of people have been promoting chocolate for centuries. Doctors say it's packed with the kind of chemicals that make you feel good, and dark chocolate is said to actually reduce cholesterol.
