(CBS) — Almost all of us use one every day. But you may be surprised to find out what lies inside your computer keyboard.

This may make you think twice about typing. A London consumer group says our computer keyboards have five times more harmful bacteria than a toilet seat.

While food can be found in the keys, much more lies beneath. Swabs of more than 30 keyboards discovered bugs related to staph infection and e-coli.

‘You’ may not be able to see it but microbiologists can with ultraviolet light.

"If you sneeze or blow your nose you’ll put viruses on there, which can spread colds. And, even worse, if you go to the toilet and don't wash your hands afterward, you'll put coliforms on there,” explained Dr. Peter Wilson of London’s University College Hospital. “All of these can cause disease in other people.”

For those who share a computer with co-workers, you maybe sharing a whole lot more than you thought. So to get the bugs before they get you experts say gently shake out any crumbs and then use some alcohol wipes or a disinfectant.

David Wallach uses paper towels and Windex.

"I find it really helps me to work better having a clean environment,” he said.

Angela Brotons goes a step further and uses a can of compressed air to clean out her keyboard.

"So I try to do my best to keep the place clean and also for whoever else is here, whoever comes after me,” she said.

Cleaning those keys can delete any germs and stop the spread of sickness.
