Some warn of the risks of chiropractic stroke

The use of chiropractors has been on the rise.

But before being treated by one, there are things consumers should know because one wrong decision can cause a lifetime of suffering.

Britt Harwa suffered a stroke, which left her weak on one side, unable to eat or swallow, and blind in one eye.

She blames the stroke on a simple visit to her chiropractor 11 years ago.

"He did a manipulation, immediately,” Harwa said. “I felt a rushing in my head, a sound. I couldn't speak."

Doctors say Britt suffered from a vertebrobasilar stroke, caused by excessive neck manipulation to the spinal column.

"Manipulation of the neck should be done by someone who is very expert in it,” said neurologist Dr. Michael Batipps.

Many chiropractors use this form of therapy to ease neck pain.

But sometimes, when the neck is improperly twisted, the bones that protect the vertebral arteries that go up the back of the neck can pinch or snap, causing a kink in those arteries.

They can produce blood clots and once they become loose they travel to the brain causing a stroke.

"Because not only is there the theoretical possibility of kinking the vertebral artery, which is somewhat rare ... there's also the possibility of kinking the spinal cord," Batipps said.

Advocacy groups say stroke caused by neck manipulation though still rare is on the rise, because the use of chiropractic treatment is on the rise.

The American Chiropractic Association is aware of the problem and has updated its website with consumer information on what to look for in a licensed chiropractor.

“This is part of an ongoing campaign that we have to insure that patients understand all the risk and opportunities of chiropractic care," said Kevin Corcoran from The American Chiropractic Association.

Britt sued her doctor and settled out of court. Now involved with the Chiropractic Stroke Awareness Group, a Connecticut-based organization, she alerts people of the risks of stroke and chiropractic care.

Although licensed chiropractors are required to attend an accredited chiropractic school for two to four years and take state approved exams, the group warns chiropractors are still not medical doctors and don't have to pass the same tests as physicians of medicine in order to hang up a shingle.

"People need to know when you are using the title 'Doctor,' it is a medical degree ... that's why it's so important that they need to specify that they are doctors of chiropractic," Harwa said.

Harwa believes this information could have changed her life had she known about it more than a decade ago.

Lets see... DC's malpractice insurance: $1200 per year. MD's malpractice insurance: $75-100k per year. You do the math.

Criminal assault? Since the risk of having a stroke is higher for putting your head back in a sink at the hair salon, what would that be....homicide? An informed consent should include true risks, not "risks" created by flawed studies.

absent informed consent , if patient has a stroke after manipulation it should be considered criminal assault by the chiropractor

several words were left out of my last post when I submitted it. It should read: ...Since the primary symptom of that type of stroke is neck pain and headache, patients are more likely to.... thank you.

Facts please....no more fear. The 70 years of "scientific data" only show an association between visits to the chiropractor and stroke. Associations do not mean causal relationships. Since the primary headache, patients are more likely to seek out chiropractic care when the stroke is occuring. The Chiropractors involved failed to properly diagnose the patients. Your anti-chiropractic bias is obvious.

People can write to our e-mail address to get information on a half billion dollar lawsuit against the chiropractic regulatory College in Alberta as well as 70 years of scientific data shpowing stroke and death as well as six specific restrictions that every patient foolish enough to have a chiropractor touch their neck should sign. Finally we have a paper on the so called "studies" Producing Quack Studies for Qauckery.

To Georgine and Jon- It's the two of you, and your organized effort to discredit and slander chiropractors in a clearly biased attack designed to injure chiropractors financially during a time of health care refrm, that is void of facts and truth. Funny this organized attack started about the time chiropractors were added to the active military and VA health systems and at a time when they're likely to get an expansion in Medicare...because patients are clammoring for more! Safe & effective.

To Georgine: This is not a true risk FACT: "VBA stroke is a very rare event in the population. The increased risks of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic and PCP visits is likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care before their stroke. We found no evidence of risk of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic care" (Spine. 33(4S), February 15, 2008. Why should legislators mandate informed consent for very safe chiropractic procedures but not require it for much more dangerous medical and physical therapy procedures? How is that good public policy making? Britt doesn't make much sense here. I think she's just on a vindictive crusade to make chiropractors look bad and drive them out of business, personally.

There is no appreciable risk so we take offense your the campaign of distortion and slander. No chiropractor is protecting profits when they clarify that the risk of stroke is extrordinarily small and holds your organization accountable for misleading the public. Would you rather people have surgery or take drugs that are 100's x more dangerous. Or got to PT that is more epxensive and less effective? Your organized slander campaign is more dangerous than the chiropractors. The AG's are watching.

If you chiropractors would only LISTEN and PAY ATTENTION to the ads/interviews..no one is against chiropractic.. they are just saying that there is a definite, serious risk of stroke, permanent disability and even death, which chiropractors ALL know about with a cervical/spinal manipulation. It is risk that should be known just like medical risks, drugs, smoking, even some toys. PLEASE, do not put profits ahead of people's health..no other true profession does this, esp. those who claim to be drs

Jon- seriously, you organize an attack against chiropractors that is totally unfair and completely baseless and they cannot even fight back? How abusive of you guys who are doing this to them. Holding them down, beating them, and they cannot fight back with the truth? I adore my chiropractor and I am proud to call him Doctor as he has fixed my knee, my lower back and helped with my blood pressure after all of my MD's put me on dangerous drugs or reccomended deadly surgeries. You are shameful.

All of these comments are clearly from chiropractors. Rather than being concerned about the safety of their patients they are more concerned about what this news might do to their "business"...I think it is wrong that so-called medical professionals take this approach. They should just admit that people are being injured and tell people of the risks BEOFRE doing the procedures (neck manipulation)...people deserve the right the make informed choices!

Friday, Jun 27 at 12:43 PM dave wrote ...

This is from out dated info. Check out the journal spine from feb 15th, 2008. No increased stroke risk with chiropractic adjustments.

Shall we start talking about medical errors. Chiropractic is not only safe but it is much more effective and less invasive than sugery. Maybe you should report on all the medical errors including flawed sugeries, missed diagnosis, over prescribing which leads to drup abuse, and not to mention the cost of medical compared to chiropractic. Sugery versus chiropractic is not only more affordable but most patients go back to work in less time than with surgery.

I think this article is attacking the chiropractic as whole. far from the fact and didn't mention the recent study that chiropractic is safe and won't cause stroke

Thursday, Jun 26 at 8:02 PM Just Wondering wrote ...

Why is there no mention of the recent study that showed a chiropractor cannot injure a healthy artery and that the people who suffer a stroke with manipulation were presenting to the office with a stroke already in progress? Doing a Google search of this supposed victim she seems the be everywhere. My understanding is that these injuries are very rare and that would seem to be supported by the fact that this entire international crusade is really about one victim.
